This month by month gardening calendar is designed to remind you of the most appropriate time for various activities in the garden. I hope it will be useful for both beginners and more experienced gardeners. You can check both this month's garden tips and tips from previous months - or even for later months if you like to plan ahead.
Use the month tabs at left to navigate through the garden year but bear in mind that the timing really applies to the Southeastern New York region - USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6a and 6b which includes New York City, northern New Jersey, Rockland county, Westchester county, southern Connecticut and parts of Long Island.
Plant hardiness zones refer to geographic areas where the growing season of garden plants is determined by the time of hard frosts in the spring and fall. If you live in a more southerly plant hardiness zone, you can start gardening earlier in the season.
In more northerly zones, you may need to leave it a little later. Even within zones, climatic factors such as altitude, how close you are to the coast or large areas of water, wind exposure, winter sun exposure and snow cover make a difference. They contribute to the existence of different "microclimates" and can influence what you can do in your garden and when.
If you’re not sure about your own area, check out some of the selection of books below. You will find lots of useful gardening calendar titles - and probably lots of other garden books and garden magazines you would love too!
